David Lee Roth He announced that he was retiring from music.
Former lead singer of a rock band Van Halen, 66 years old, revealed the news in a Las Vegas magazine review Friday’s article, says he’s “throwing on the shoe” and backing off his prolific music career.
“This is the first and only official announcement,” Roth said by phone in a conversation described by the outlet. “I’ve received the news. Share it with the world.”
Roth added that he was “not going to explain the statement” and that his next five shows at House of Blues Las Vegas would be his last.
Although Roth did not give a reason for his retirement, his surprise announcement comes nearly a year after the Van Halen co-founder and guitarist. Eddie Van Halen He died of cancer at the age of 65.
Roth told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he had been thinking about “the recent passing of my beloved classmate” and said he was “encouraged and compelled to understand how short, perhaps, my time is shorter.”
“I thought I might be the first, frankly,” he said. “And my doctors, those who treat me, have forced me to really address this every time I’m on stage, putting that future at risk.”
But even though Roth says his retirement is imminent, he still plans to bring his A-game to his final performance.
“I know that when I am in the audience, whether you are going out with a ukulele or a band, all I ask of you is that you give me all you have to give,” he said. “That’s what I’ve done for the past 50 years.”
With Ruth as lead singer, Van Halen released his self-titled debut album in 1978. But tensions between Ruth and the band erupted after their 1984 world tour, and Ruth left. The group then recruited Sami Hager as lead singer—some critics dubbed the new version “Van Hager”—and the band went on to record their first #1 album with “5150”. More studio albums followed, including “OU812”, “For Unlockful Carnal Knowledge” and “Balance”.
Ruth would eventually return in 2007 and collaborate with brothers Van Halen and Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen for a tour, ‘A Different Kind of Truth’ album and 2015 live album ‘Tokyo Dome Live in Concert’.
Van Halen is among the 20 best-selling artists of all time, and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. The band has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and won once, in 1995, for Best Rock Performance by Voice of “For Unbelievable Physical Knowledge” legitimate.”
