Seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton explained why Valtteri Bottas considers him the “best teammate” to date.
Valtteri Bottas will leave Mercedes alone for the 2021 season and will start a new F1 career with Alfa Romeo from 2022.
Following this announcement, Lewis Hamilton posted on social media that Valtteri Bottas is “the best teammate I’ve ever worked with.”
For Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas was the fifth teammate after Fernando Alonso, Heikki Kovalainen, Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg.
Lewis Hamilton told Sky Italia that Valtteri Bottas was the first teammate to openly communicate why he considers him a “best teammate”.
“I met Fernando when I was a kid. I was enthusiastic and talented, but I didn’t know how to go about things,” said Lewis Hamilton.
“After that I realized that I was in a different position with Kovalainen, Jenson and Nico. I learned different things from each.”
“Each one was a challenge. I can learn from my teammates and vice versa, so I can’t get around it. I can make mistakes. For better or worse, travel with them. Nothing changes “
“I recently commented on my current team-mate saying he was the best team-mate, but I need to figure out what that definition means.”
“We play a sport that is aimed at winning two different championships. Both are trying to win the drivers’ title, but they also have the task of winning the constructors’ title, so we have to work together.”
“Actually, I was a teammate who could communicate for the first time. I felt so…” “I have that feeling. “Helping each other to be their best version.”
“It’s something that hasn’t happened to other drivers before. It’s unique. And it’s great as a person. When we’re off course, we talk like gentlemen. There’s no trick.”
Lewis Hamilton will welcome the young George Russell to Mercedes as his sixth teammate from 2022.
