Global Covid deaths reach 5 million as Delta variant sweeps the world


It took nearly a year for the number of COVID-19 deaths to reach 2.5 million.

According to a Reuters count, the global number of deaths from COVID-19 surpassed 5 million on Friday as the Delta variant causes an increase in deaths, mainly among the unvaccinated.

More than half of all global deaths reported on a seven-day average were in the United States, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and India.

Worldwide, an average of 8,000 deaths were reported every day in the past week, which equates to five deaths per minute.
