Cricket great Brian Lara believes Shubhman Gill is in form and just a game away from a big score. Speaking of Punjab KINGs, Lara said the team has the potential to make play-offs despite not playing great cricket at the moment.
Punjab Kings won by 5 wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders in Match No. 45 of the 2021 IPL on October 1. Shubhman Gill was sacked and scored 7 runs on a brilliant swinger from Arshdeep Singh. Shubhaman Gill’s form has been a concern for the Kolkata-based franchise. He has managed to score just 239 runs in 12 games. Commenting on how things have turned out for Shubhman Gill, former cricket great Brian Lara has said Gill is only a game away from scoring a big score and Kolkata should not consider replacing him.
“Gill is a bit unlucky and if you look at him, he is in some form. I think he’s just a game away from a big score. He fits very well with Iyer (Venkatesh) and I believe they can both take KKR to new heights. Replacing Gill now is not something KKR should consider,” he told the Star Sports show Game Plan.
This season was tough for Punjab Kings. The team is fifth in the points list with 10 points from 12 games. Their percussion was not up to the mark and heavy reliance on KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal hurt them the most. Sharing his opinion on the team’s abilities Lara stated that the team has the potential to make the play-offs despite not playing great cricket at the moment.
“I think their team has the capabilities, even if they aren’t playing great cricket at the moment. Their punching has just always been their strength and it fell very short. Nicholas Pooran and Chris Gayle are not playing well. Even their captain KL Rahul has been out since the resume not in good form their batting is the only thing they depended on in the past where they posted big totals and tried to defend it but if they don’t put big runs on the board they find it very hard with the bowling attack they have,” he explained.
Lara analyzed the team’s performance and believed that hitting Punjab was their main concern. The battle unit doesn’t click and that’s the problem for the team.
“Ravi Bishnoi is performing well and Mohammed Shami as you know is a professional and that is what they expect from him. Their percussion has to click and when they click, they give themselves that little chance. It doesn’t mean they can pull it off, but they’re giving themselves a better chance than they’ve given themselves in recent games,” he concluded.
