Mumbai Indians continued to strike at crucial moments as they defended 129/8 but failed to get past Shreyas Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals to a four-wicket victory in Sharjah on Saturday. With seven defeats from 12 games, the defending champions now have a tough road ahead of them in the play-offs race.
Mumbai Indians managed to pass the Delhi Capitals top order beforehand and cut them down to 30/3 in just the fourth left of the chase. Rishabh Pant had some adventurous strokes on his 22-ball 26, but holed out to Jayant Yadav’s long-on to give MI an opening.
However, Shreyas Iyer scored a well-calculated run-a-ball 33*, to lead his side home accompanied by Ravichandran Ashwin (20* out of 21).
Previously, the Capitals delivered a collective bowling effort, with Avesh Khan (3/15) and Axar Patel (3/21) playing a vital role in limiting MI to 129/8. While Axar outwitted Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav and Saurabh Tiwary with his restraining breakouts, Avesh bounced on Rohit Sharma, before clearing Hardik Pandya with a stunning yorker.
The five-time champions are now sixth in the points list and they must win both remaining league matches, while hoping for other results to break into the top four. They will take on the Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, October 5 in Sharjah.
