Touted as one of the best batsmen of the highest order in India, Maharashtra’s Ruturaj Gaikwad was first signed in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) in IPL 2020, playing for Chennai Super Kings. He had a few failures at the start of the season but finished the tournament with three straight fifties and that’s when we knew there was something special going on with this young lad.
Read Scoops first spoken to him for that IPL 2020 season and you can read that exclusive interview here. Entering IPL 2021, he was also one of the leading points scorers for them, along with his opening partner Faf du Plessis. One particular night of October 2, 2021 in Abu Dhabi is a night he will never forget, where he raised his first IPL century in IPL 2021 Match 47, against Rajasthan Royals.
CSK, brought in by the Royals, lost a few wickets early, but Gaikwad held on to one side and scored runs at ease. A short man of stature, he started pushing some brilliant balls to the limit and also hit some muscular sixes. During the innings, he also brought out his fourth fifty of 2021 IPL, along with overtaking everyone else on the Orange Cap list, becoming the first to 500 runs in the season.

However, it is not the Orange Cap or 500 runs in the season that will make him memorable. It’s the fact that he scored his highest knock in his short IPL career to date, while also scoring his first-ever IPL century. A night he won’t soon forget, Gaikwad entertained everyone with a total of 9 fours and 5 sixes on his turns.
You think about people like Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell and Rohit Sharma hitting the big sixes, and you wouldn’t expect a little guy like Ruturaj Gaikwad to hit the 100m sixes. However, he gave us many surprises on this day, and we are sure many more will come out of his bat. Thanks to his brilliant timing today, CSK was able to achieve a score of 189/4 in their quota of 20 overs in the second game of the day’s double header.
A team that usually didn’t boast of big hitters and personal bests over the years, it took a long time to this day for a CSK batsman to get an IPL century. It was May 2018 that Shane Watson scored his fourth and final century for the franchise he did so well for. It was also a special one because he scored it in the final of the IPL 2018, about which you can read more here.

He made it onto the list of all-time IPL ages and we’re sure there will be a few more of this special young talent’s bats. He went on to collect the Orange Cap and said that personal bests didn’t matter because there was a chance he wouldn’t make it to his century. Ravindra Jadeja went crazy on the other side, leaving Gaikwad just two balls to get 5 runs for his century.
It seemed highly unlikely after Mustafizur Rahman threw a good bounce and Gaikwad failed to score in it. It took 5 runs on the last ball of the innings, Gaikwad hit six more and reached this milestone with a great shot. His first T20 hundred came out in style and he clenched his fists as soon as he hit it! For more updates on the best IPL ages, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com…
