Brentford boss Thomas Frank believes England head coach Gareth Southgate is already looking at Ivan Toney and what he can do, but added the attacker must continue to perform. The De Bees striker has been a sensation for the club this season with four goals in the league so far.
With Brentford earning their first promotion to the Premier League, many feared striker Ivan Toney would not replicate his form at the highest level. The 25-year-old scored 31 goals and added a further 10 assists last season when the Bees topped the rankings, a total that astonished fans and critics alike. But with manager Thomas Frank keeping his faith in Toney and Bryan Mbuemo as his striker, the duo have repaid their trust thus far.
Toney has contributed to four goals in his six league games, while Mbuemo scored one goal, with the ball striker clearing the way for the side. But with England without Dominic Calvert-Lewin and a few other options, Ivan Toney was overlooked by Gareth Southgate. Despite that, however, Thomas Frank believes Southgate is already looking at Toney, adding that the attacker must continue to perform to break his English duck.
“If Ivan continues to perform as he has done so far, I think he will definitely be there. I think Gareth is already looking at him, and I would expect that. Gareth has done a fantastic job as England manager, the results that he has to speak for himself he’s a very detailed man and i’m sure he’s looking at Ivan and then it’s that balance between who you already have in the squad, different types and stuff But Ivan’s performance, if he continues like this, he will be a player who is in the running for a position in the squad.”
