In Arsenal Under-23’s 3-0 win over Brighton on Friday night, Folarin Balogun added to his growing reputation with another devastating performance.
The 20-year-old striker had already scored the first goal of the game in the 14th minute and his penalty, which he deserved after an incredible feat of genius, put the game out of reach.
Balogun received the ball close to the corner flag and rolled it under his studs with his right boot before shooting the ball forward and through the knees of Odel Offiah with the inside of his left foot.
The stunned Brighton defender chased Balogun into the penalty area, panicking his opponent clumsily.
Balogun, who was called up to Lee Carsley’s England Under-21 squad earlier this week, was on the cusp of leaving Arsenal in January due to a lack of first-team opportunities.
The gifted forward was eventually persuaded to sign a new long-term contract with the Emirates, but he has only played three games for Mikel Arteta this season.
In the absence of both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the American-born striker made his Premier League debut on the first day of the season, and he looked out of his depth against a resurgent Brentford.
Balogun then had a cameo appearance against Chelsea and only got a seven-minute run against Wimbledon in the final round of the Carabao Cup two weeks ago.
