Pope Francis laments ‘terrible outbreak of violence’ in Ecuador prison

Vatican hopes pre-COP26 climate event will raise stakes in Glasgow

The Vatican hopes a meeting where world religious leaders will take a common stance on the environment could raise “ambitions” about what can be achieved at next month’s UN conference on climate change, the foreign minister said. Monday’s one-day event, organized by the Vatican, the United Kingdom and Italy, will bring together about 40 faith leaders from the world’s major religions and scientists from about 20 countries. The leaders, including Pope Francis, will sign a joint appeal and hand it over to Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and Britain’s Alok Sharma, chair of the UN meeting known as COP26 in Glasgow.
