Dale Steyn believes Rohit Sharma will be a great option to take over the T20I captaincy from Virat Kohli, who has decided to step down after the completion of the 2021 T20 World Cup. Steyn added that there are ‘many’ players who can lead the Indian team in the future.
Since then, Virat Kohli has made the announcement to step down as India’s captain of the T20I after the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman, a discussion about his possible successor in the format has erupted.
Former South Africa Dale Steyn, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, believes Rohit Sharma could be the right person to nurture the youngsters on the team. India won 8 out of 10 ODIs and 15 out of 10T20Is led by the 34-year-old. Also, Mumbai Indians have won five IPL titles under Rohit’s captaincy.
“They have a lot of different people to choose from. I think the most exciting thing for India right now is that the young players coming through, they are all world class players. Look at Mohammed Siraj, Rishabh Pant… these are young lads who are doing exceptionally well at international level. So if you give the captaincy to Rohit, who has been around for a while… has won countless IPLs, it will be a great decision as he can nurture the youngsters.” Steyn told Sport Tak.
Steyn added that there are tons of players who could lead the Indian team in the future such as Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant.
“They have tons. You just have to look around the IPL and there are so many players. You have SKY, which I think will come in somewhere. You have Rishabh Pant, who looks good. There are so many of these guys… Iyer, Rohit They can do it all but you have to give someone that responsibility and allow them to run with it India has been very good with it They have captained certain players for a long time and they did the job,” Steyn added.
