Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu on his way to injured list

NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees put All-Star infielder DJ LeMahieu on Sunday’s 10-day injured list with a sports hernia ahead of their scheduled regular season finale against the Tampa Bay Rays.

LeMahieu was withdrawn from the New York game in Toronto on Thursday after six innings and has not played since. He’s been working day by day to work his way back into the lineup. When he was still uncomfortable with baseball activities Sunday morning, the Yankees decided to put him on the shelf.

“Ultimately, he’s too compromised to play now,” said manager Aaron Boone.

Rougned Odor started on third base on Sunday in LeMahieu’s place, and Tyler Wade and Andrew Velazquez also saw time in the hot corner with LeMahieu out.

LeMahieu, a three-time Gold Glove winner and two-time batting champion, hit .268 with 10 home runs, 57 RBI’s and a .711 OPS in 150 games. The hernia has plagued him for at least the past 10 days, and he’s also had to deal with an ongoing triceps injury this year.

New York called out rookie righthander Luis Gil in a corresponding move. The Yankees are also without 2020 home run champion Luke Voit, who entered the IL on Thursday with inflammation of the left knee.

The Yankees have lost to the Rays twice in a row and came in with Boston for the highest AL wild on Sunday. They would go on to win playing at Fenway Park if the Red Sox also beat Washington on Sunday. If New York loses, it will at the very least end up in one of the many tiebreak scenarios also taking place on Monday, which also involve Toronto and Seattle, each one game back.
