Kühnert was happy when Scholz lost to Walter-Borjans and Esken
A camera team followed Kevin Kühnert for three years – also capturing moments behind the scenes. You can see how the former Juso boss reacted when Olaf Scholz was defeated in the election for the SPD party chairmanship.
kis just before the moment of great joy Kevin Kuhnert still shocked. “Olaf and Klara have won,” said the then Juso boss in an elevator in the Willy-Brandt-Haus at the end of November 2019.
It is the day of the announcement of the results of who will be the new presidents of the SPD. The party members can vote in the second round between two teams: Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz and former state MP Klara Geywitz on the one hand, former NRW finance minister Norbert Walter-Borjans and Bundestag member Saskia Esken on the other.
For a moment, Kühnert, who openly supports the latter team, believes Scholz and Geywitz have won. That is apparently what it says in a text message he received before the official results were announced. “Too much not to be happy too soon,” says a visibly depressed Kühnert. Moments later, it turns out that the news was lost. The competition is still open.

“We are ready”, cheers Kühnert
The documentary series starts with the state elections in Hesse in October 2018, with the SPD crashing to 19.8 percent. It shows the battle for the SPD presidency – and ends with the surprising electoral success of the Social Democrats and their candidate for Chancellor Scholz on the Bundestag election 2021.
In November 2019, however, Kevin Kühnert was still very happy when Walter-Borjans and Esken Scholz inflicted a defeat. “We are through”, says Kühnert when the result is certain and is of course very satisfied.
He responded to a televised interview with Esken saying, “It will all be very difficult, but we will also have a lot of fun with her.”
Later, Kühnert, together with Walter-Borjans and Esken, will support the federal finance minister in his candidacy for chancellor.
