Republic of Ireland Men’s Under-19 Head Coach Tom Mohan has selected 23 players for a friendly double-header against Sweden in Marbella, including nine players who are lining up to earn their first caps with the side.
John Joe Patrick Finn Benoa, Aidemo Emakhu, Cristiano Fitzgerald, Oisin Gallagher, Cian Hayes, Johnny Kenny, Jevon Mills, Josh Seary and Harry Vaughan are ready to hit the green for the first time.
Mohan takes his squad to the south of Spain where he prepares for next month’s UEFA Under-19 European Qualifiers in Bulgaria. Bulgaria, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro are all in the Irish group.
The Boys in Green will take on Swedish MU19 on Friday October 8 and again on Monday October 11.
Friday’s game will last 689 days since Tom Mohan was last sidelined for an international match, a qualifier against Austria in November 2019.
Speaking of waiting almost two years to get back into action, Mohan said: “We are very much looking forward to returning to competitions.
“The roster we have selected is the result of the hard work of our MU19s staff and FAI scouts in Ireland and the UK who have covered countless matches. It has enabled us to monitor and assess a large group of players during evaluation days and training camps in Ireland and England before selecting the roster for these friendlies against Sweden.
“It’s so good to finally have clarity that games can continue. We are delighted to have a team back together after such a long preparation and Sweden will undoubtedly be a tough opponent. They are a strong, well organized side with quality attacking players who will be a test for us and that is what we want.
“I’m sure the games will have a good advantage as players will be fighting for places in the European qualifiers.”
