Real Madrid coach criticizes his team’s performance: he played the worst game of the season

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his side played the “worst game of the season”, after a 1-2 loss to Espanyol in the Spanish first division.

Real Madrid lost a game for the second time in a row after losing at home to Moldovan club Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League last Tuesday.

Real have not won the last three games in all competitions, but are leading the local league with 17 points and a goal difference from its defending champion neighbor and rival Atletico Madrid.

“We played badly and we started the game with a plan to defend and attack, but that plan was not followed,” said Ancelotti, who returned this season for his second term at Real Madrid.

He added: “I don’t think our position on the pitch was good, with or without the ball, and I have to be honest, I think it was the worst game since I came back to coach the team.”

Real Madrid will play the next round at home with Athletic Bilbao on October 17.

A resounding European fall for Real Madrid in the “Santiago Bernabeu”

The defeat coincided with Real Madrid’s return to the famed Santiago Bernabeu stadium, a year and seven months after it was closed, for extensive updates.

With a resounding result, Spanish club Real Madrid, 13-time Champions League title, fell home to humble Moldovan Sherif Tiraspol 1-2 in the second round of Group D competitions last Tuesday.

The defeat coincided with Real Madrid’s return to its famous stadium, “Santiago Bernabeu” in the Champions League, after a year and 7 months of closure, to carry out extensive updates.

The Moldovan champion achieved a “historic feat” by beating the Spanish team in the capital Madrid, according to AFP, with two goals from an Uzbek player and a Luxembourg player. The French striker, of Algerian descent, Karim Benzema, equalized for the hosts in the 65th minute with a penalty kick.

Real Madrid have only scored once at the Santiago Bernabeu in their last 37 matches in the Champions League group stage, after a 3-0 loss to Russia’s CSKA Moscow in December 2018, according to AFP.
