Williams F1 team representative Jost Capito believes signing with Alex Albon proved Williams was not a Mercedes B team, but said that was not the reason Albon was chosen. ..
George Russell has decided to move to Mercedes F1 in 2022 and his successor, Nicholas Latifi’s teammate, has now been selected as Red Bull F1 reserve driver Alex Albon.
This was against the intention of Williams engine supplier Mercedes to secure a seat for Formula E driver Nyck de Vries.
The choice of Alex Albon proves that Williams is not a Mercedes B team, says Yoslo Capito, who emphasizes that this is not the main reason for signing with Albon.
“It shows and confirms that we are not Team B,” Jost Capito told The Race.
“It is not important to send this message to anyone. It just shows that we are doing our best for the team and that we are making that decision within the team. We are telling everyone but ourselves. Not moved.”
“Obviously this message is going out, but not because of the message.”
Jost Capito and his co-owners believe they wouldn’t be an F1 world champion without it, and they are keen to emphasize and push for independence.
“As Team B, we will never become world champions,” added Jost Capito.
“If you depend on another company or another team, you will never win the world champion and with such a message you lose confidence within your team.”
“That’s about giving up being a world champion. You just say you want to be part of the show. That’s all.”
However, Jost Capito emphasized that several factors played a greater role in the decision to sign Alex Albon than Nyck de Vries. In particular, he said he bought Albon’s F1 experience, attitude and relatively young age.
“His experience, the people who have worked with him talk about how he works, how to set up and improve the machine, and about his personality,” said Joest Capito.
“It’s very important that the driver’s personality matches the personality of the team, and I think his mindset is exactly what we have for the team.”
“We wanted to pick a driver who had F1 experience and was still on the road. If we wanted to build a team, we also needed consistency and we made him a long-term and multi-year team. I consider it a member.”
“Of course you always have to see what happens and how everything develops, but the intention is to hire him for a long time.”
