Cyclone wreaks havoc in Oman

A severe storm hit Oman on Sunday, leading to deadly flooding.

Cyclone Shaheen causes large floods all over Omanboth on the coast and inland. Municipal workers used pumps and bulldozers to remove water and debris from the streets as Omani army and air force delivered goods to civilians in affected areas.

A cyclone is a storm with very strong winds and heavy rainfall. The term is synonymous with hurricane and is used for storms in the Indian Ocean.

Oman’s National Committee for Emergency Management said on Monday that: seven people died as a result of damage done by Shaheen, while the Associated Press’s total death toll at 13.

The committee also reported failures in communication networks and school closures, and asked employers to prevent their staff from coming to work because of the dangerous travel conditions.

There has been a… huge rescue attempt, with first responders using helicopters to pick up people trapped by the raging floods.

The Gulf State civil aviation authority said Monday afternoon local time the cyclone was “gradually disappearing” but a threat remained.

Shaheen has also hit Iran where some fishermen have been murdered, the official news agency of the Islamic Republic said.
