IPL 2021: Race for fourth playoff spot now realistically between KKR and MI – All possibilities in 5 points | Cricket News

Mumbai Indians needed a big win to keep their play-off hopes alive and they delivered on Tuesday. A comprehensive 8-wicket win against Rajasthan, after the Royals were limited to just 90-9, helped MI climb to fifth on the points table, just behind KKR on NRR. MI chased the small target with a whopping 70 balls left.
With PBKS and RR on 10 points, with one game each to play, the best these two teams can do in terms of points is 12. However, MI and KKR can both hit 14 points. KKR enjoys all these teams the best NRR. The race for fourth place in the playoffs has now basically come down to one between KKR and MI.
KKR will play their last game against RR on Thursday, while MI will play their 14th league game against SRH on Friday.
Here’s a quick, 5-point look at the various playoff scenarios, as things stand after MI defeated RR on Tuesday:
1) On the table, KKR is still ahead of the others competing for the fourth slot. If they win their last match against RR and SRH beat MI, KKR will occupy that slot exclusively. They can get fourth even if they don’t beat RR, if SRH beats MI. With how many teams they are right in that case, depends on the result of the match between CSK and PBKS. If CSK wins that, it will be a 12 point tie between KKR, MI and RR. If PBKS wins, it will also be 12 points with these three. The good news for KKR is that it has by far the best net run rate of these four teams and should qualify in any situation. If MI wins against SRH, KKR must win its last match to be tied for points.
2) MI is now in fifth place, equal to KKR but well behind NRR. Since the gap is too big to hide, their only real chance to qualify is to win the last game against SRH and hope KKR lose to RR. If KKR wins that game, MI can at best tie a tie with them and that will almost certainly not be enough.
3) PBKS is in sixth place, but the best it can hope for is a four point tie for fourth place on 12 points. That can only happen if MI loses to SRH and KKR loses to RR. But even in that situation, his NRR is unlikely to improve the KKRs and so it could be a curtain on them.
4) Like PBKS, RR can now take fourth on points at best. Again, that can only happen if they beat KKR and SRH beats MI. Their NRR is currently even worse than PBKS and MI, meaning a draw probably won’t be enough to qualify.
5) In fact, the race now goes to KKR and MI, with KKR clearly ahead.
