MI vs RR | Can’t blame the batsmen, wicket was challenging to save, says Sanju Samson after defeat to MI

After an eight-wicket defeat to the Mumbai Indians on Tuesday in Sharjah, Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson declared the wicket challenging for hitting in the first innings. He was hopeful that his team would bounce back on Thursday in their final league game against KKR.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bowl first, and their bowlers showed a brilliant performance with the ball, limiting the Rajasthan Royals to a paltry score of 90/9. Jimmy Neesham, who played his first game for MI in the second phase of IPL 2021, was the highlight with his 3/12 of his four overs.

RR openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Evin Lewis scored 21 runs from the first two overs, before the first was ejected by Nathan Coulter Nile. The Australian pacemaker, who was named Man of the Match, scalped three more wickets and finished 4/14.

Rohit Sharma (22) and Ishan Kishan caused MI to flee in pursuit, before the first fell to Chetan Sakariya in the fourth over. Kishan, who replaced Quinto de Kock in the XI, hit an unbeaten 50 off 25 balls with five fours three max to lead MI to their sixth win of the season. With the win against RR, Mumbai Indians have climbed to fifth place to keep their hopes for play-offs alive.

Looking back on the crusing loss, Sanju Samson stated that the wicket was difficult to hit in the first innings, and that the batsmen were not solely responsible for the loss.

“It was a bit challenging wicket to save, it was more difficult in the first innings. Coming from Abu Dhabi, playing in Sharjah was a huge difference. I can’t fault the batsmen much, but it was difficult in the first innings. Abu Dhabi had one of the best batting wickets, switching to Sharjah was difficult. Mindset – it’s a bit cloudy now, we need to take some time off and then think about the next match. We definitely want a better cricket in the We knew they were going to be strong, in the power play they wanted to increase the run rate. The wicket was a little better than the first innings, but they hit really well,” Sanju Samson said after the game.

RR has now fallen back to seventh on the points list and has nearly fallen out of the race to the playoffs. They will face the Kolkata Knight Riders in their final league game in Sharjah on Thursday, October 7th.
