Michael Martinez returns after a 3-year hiatus

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Olympic figure skater Michael Martinez is poised for a comeback after a three-year hiatus.

Martinez will return in the Finlandia Trophy that will take place from October 7 to 10 in Espoo, Finland, the Philippine Skating Federation announced on Tuesday.

Two other Filipinos in Sofia Frank and Christopher Caluza will also participate in the tournament.

The 2021 Finlandia Trophy is the fourth in a series of nine events of the 2021-2022 Figure Skating Challenger Series taking place October 7-10, 2021.

Martinez, 24, has not competed since the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, where he finished 28th.

He was due to compete in the CS Nebelhorn Trophy last month, but pleaded due to injury.

Frank is fresh from participating in the Nebelhorn Trophy where she finished 24th. The Fil American also won the bronze medal in the 2021 Colorado Springs Invitational.

Born in Chula Vista, California to Filipino parents and also based in the United States, Caluza is a silver medalist at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
