Samoan Prop Tietie Tuimauga joins Connacht

Connacht have expanded their 2021/22 recruitment with the signing of loosehead prop Tietie Tuimauga.

The 28-year-old Samoan recently made the move from the former New Zealand Manawatu and earned two caps with the Samoan national team in the summer, against Tonga and the Maori All Blacks.

Connacht was looking for an extra loosehead prop this season, with Denis Buckley likely to be sidelined until the New Year and continuing his rehabilitation from a long-term knee injury late last year.

Tuimauga will join the roster in the coming weeks to be available for selection later in 2021.

Commenting on the signing, Head Coach Andy Friend said:

β€œIt’s no secret that at loosehead we’ve been exploring further options after Denis Buckley’s long-term injury, so we’re delighted to welcome Tietie to Connacht. We now have strong coverage across our entire front row, which is a good place to be, and with Tietie’s experience, he’ll give us something different.

We now have a Pro squad of 44 plus some integrated Academy players, so I’m really happy with the group we’ve put together. Our sole focus now is on building on last week’s win when we face the Dragons on Saturday.”

After their first URC defeat to Cardiff, the Westerners came out 34-7 winners last week with a bonus point win against the Bulls.

Andy Friend’s squad will face the Dragons at the Sportsground next Saturday for the interprovincial block of the season.

Connacht travels first to Thomond Park to face Munster, before taking on Ulster at the Aviva Stadium on October 23, in what will be the first major sporting event in Ireland without a limited Covid-19 capacity.
