Squid Game Review: Show rejected for 10 years is a bit predictable

For the past few months, Korea seems to be taking over the content and entertainment business, we just don’t know why or how. Whether it’s Korean music or the super popular K-Drama shows, it’s all working right now. And that is one of the main reasons for the huge hype surrounding the Korean thriller show called squid game which was released in India and worldwide on September 17, 2021.

Another reason for the huge hype is that not many shows in the past had such an approach, where you play traditional children’s games and build a dramatic and barbaric version around it. And of course the biggest hype was because apparently it took more than 10 years for the creator to actually bring it to the public. Yes, Squid Game was rejected by contenthouse for 10 years before debuting on Netflix.

I watched all 9 episodes of this show in the original Korean language with my English subtitles on and while I loved the first few episodes, the show gets a bit predictable as we progressed through the next few episodes. Although their gaming arena seemed to be fully supervised with a foolproof plan and system, an intruder (the police officer) managed to go undetected for so long.

Aside from that, the show’s heroes always managed to advance to the next round and the next game, even though they weren’t the brightest or strongest or frankly, not even the most capable of being the last man. It couldn’t have been a coincidence every time and in the end we knew that the good guys would come out victorious at some point.

Squid Game Season 2?

The writer and director of the show was the same and he obviously wasn’t thinking about a season 2 while making the show because he took out all the bad guys while only one hero was left. No stories have been left unfinished and now, due to the show’s success worldwide, he will be under pressure to deliver Squid Game Season 2. It’s clear that we can face another predictable season!

“If I could do one, it would be the Frontman’s Story” [a former cop who now oversees the game]. I think the problem with police officers is not just a problem in Korea. I see it on the world news. This was an issue I wanted to address. Maybe I can talk more about it in season two,” said Squid Game writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk about the possibility of season 2.
