Brazil tops the standings in the South American World Cup qualifiers. They will look to extend their advantage this week with another win as they take on a struggling Venezuelan side.
World Cup Qualifying
It would be hard to find anyone who thinks Brazil won’t make it to the World Cup next year. The five-time world champions have a six-point lead at the top of the standings after eight rounds of play and could extend that lead even further this week with a win over Venezuela.
Brazil have been perfect in qualifying as they have won all eight matches they have played. They are the highest scoring nation in qualifiers and also conceded the fewest goals. That dominance was also evident in their last two games, when they took consecutive wins against Chile and Peru. They scored three unanswered goals over the course of those two matches, the final success being a 2–0 win against Peru.
It is difficult to rule out the possibility of a country making it to the World Cup final, but it seems increasingly unlikely that Venezuela will make it to Qatar. They are at the bottom of the standings, winning just once in nine games. Plus, they took just four points out of a possible 27.
Venezuela’s chances have been hit hard again over the course of the last international match, when they suffered three consecutive defeats. They only scored two goals in the matches they played and conceded six. Their most recent defeat was against Paraguay, as they were beaten 2-1 in early September. It seems like they are only playing out of pride in the remaining group matches.
Venezuela vs Brazil Head to Head
Venezuela has beaten Brazil only twice in 28 encounters. Their last win was in a friendly international in 2007. Since then, Brazil has won six of the nine matches between these countries. Brazil won the last two, scoring a total of four unanswered goals.
Venezuela vs Brazil Prediction
The way the group stage has gone means it’s hard to see any result from this match this week other than an away win. Brazil could claim a comfortable 3-0 success on the road against a country that is really struggling.
