Gareth Southgate gives an injury update on Manchester United’s Luke Shaw

England manager Gareth Southgate has said Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is likely to miss Monday’s clash with San Marino.

Shaw was pulled out of the Three Lions squad earlier this week after sustaining a head injury in the 2-0 loss to Manchester City before the international break.

The defender has been following the protocols for concussion since and it now looks like he will miss the team’s last World Cup qualifier.

“I think Luke and Mason [Mount] is very unlikely now, “Southgate said.” I think we’ll run out of time with the two. “

Shaw was one of United’s best players last season and developed into one of the prominent left-backs in the Premier League.

That form carried the former Southampton man into the European Championships this summer, where he was one of England’s best players on his way to the final of the competition.

But this season, Shaw has lacked the same spirit that made him so effective last season. In fact, in the 2-0 defeat to City last weekend, he made a shocking defensive mistake that allowed Bernardo Silva to score the second goal of the match.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær can be happy to see Shaw sit out of international matches, as it gives him the best possible chance to play for the Red Devils when the Premier League and Champions League return.

England will hardly require Shaw’s help against minnows on Monday anyway. The 5-0 victory over Albania means they only need one point to secure the top spot in Group I and book their place in Qatar 2022.
