Former Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling wants to move back from Manchester City after crossing the line in 2014 for £ 50m.
It is the report that comes out of Catalan publication The national. Sterling, who played the lead role for England during the summer at the European Championships 2020, is also highly sought after by Barcelona and Arsenal – and both sides make him a transfer priority.
But rumors say Sterling, who has been heavily buhgeted since his move from Anfield, wants to return to the club he left seven years ago.
Sterling’s move to Manchester City was a controversial one, with the English striker giving an unsanctioned interview to the BBC, in which he confirmed he had rejected a new deal with Merseysiders. Sterling’s representative, Aidy Ward, claimed at the time, “I do not care about the club’s PR and the club situation … He certainly does not sign. He does not sign for £ 700, £ 800, £ 900 thousand a week.”
The player then reportedly withdrew from a tour of Asia to force a switch to City. He was panned by former Liverpool players, including Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness, for his apparent actions.
Liverpool rejected two bids before accepting close to £ 50m for the winger, making him the most expensive English player ever at the time.
Sterling has had tremendous success while in City, but has struggled for playing time since last season. This season he has been replaced in the ranks of the current most expensive Englishman ever, Jack Grealish. His contract expires in 2023.
It is believed that Barcelona are most interested in Sterling, where the new boss Xavi hopes to rejuvenate the Catalan giants. Barca desperately need a winger who can stretch the defense and Sterling fits the task on the right.
Whether the LaLiga side can afford No. 7 or not is another question. Barca are currently in cash and are apparently in favor of a loan deal for the star.
Arsenal have also been linked, with Mikel Arteta reportedly a big fan of Sterling. The Gunners striker worked with City as Pep Guardiola’s assistant and would reportedly love to add the player as an experienced option among his young front line.
