Blue Cross Blue Shield officially cuts Springfield Clinic out of the health insurance network

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) – Deborah Schmidt was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age four.

“I want it in February next year, I’ve had it for 59 years.”

She was diagnosed at the Springfield Clinic and has been going there all her life. She is cared for by seven different doctors.

Now she is one of an estimated 100,000 patients to choose between their health insurance provider and their health care provider.

“I do not even know where I would go to look for another doctor to be honest with you. Everything I have ever received and treated for was with doctors there. And they care about me,” he said. said Schmidt.

As of this week, the Springfield Clinic will no longer be a network provider for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. The health insurance company terminated the contract with the clinic back in June. The two sides point fingers at each other as the reason they can not reach agreement.

“We share in our patients’ frustration that Blue Cross and the Blue Shield of Illinois removed Springfield Clinic as a networking offering,” the clinic said in a statement. “Springfield Clinic is a major driver of affordable health care in central Illinois. Our outpatient procedures and infusions cost a fraction of the price patients would pay in a hospital. That’s exactly why we see dozens of employers and thousands of patients, who stay overnight or change insurance company to stay in network with our providers. “

Schmidt is one of the people trying to stay at the facility. She says she can not imagine finding a new care team.

“As soon as I can and I’m already starting to lead, I’ll find another insurance company,” Schmidt said.

Blue Cross Blue Shield from Illinois says negotiations with the Springfield Clinic have not gone anywhere since the contract was terminated.

“We have sought to build a new facility with the Springfield Clinic that will protect our members’ healthcare while giving them access to quality providers at competitive prices,” a spokesman for Blue Cross Blue Shield said in a statement. “We were hoping that the clinic would remain in our network. Due to the lack of concrete, specific feedback on the comprehensive proposal we offered in June, we unfortunately expect Springfield Clinic to leave the network on November 17. Our members “We offer a network of more than 3,000 physicians and healthcare professionals in central Illinois, and we are here to help switch members to network providers as smoothly as possible.”
