Care for mental health must be a priority (editorial)

Massachusetts workers can now take up to 12 weeks of paid family leave to care for a sick relative

Senate President Karen Spilka speaks at a meeting on July 1, 2021, the day new paid leave benefits take effect in Massachusetts.

For some, the pandemic has brought incredible challenges that are not easy to overcome. Feelings of anxiety, sadness, loss, and worry are all well-known emotions, but 18-month pandemics can accentuate those emotions into more serious, crippling problems.

Experts predict that as the pandemic subsides, there could be a real crisis in mental health, with more people needing services that are not currently available. A comprehensive mental health bill advocated by Democratic Senate President Karen Spilka addresses these issues in a bill to create a more robust mental health system in line with the state’s health system. The bill would partially rely on $ 400 million in federal U.S. rescue plan funds.
