Review: Shutt VR Tourmalet Jersey

The Shutt VR Tourmalet jersey is cut perfectly for when you are on the bike and is made in a very high quality, which gives it a delicious look. It is available in three colors, and the fabric is made from recycled materials, so technically it also comes in green. I would love to see a valuables pocket.

The Tourmalet is made of the same material as Shutt VR’s Tourmalet bib tights (reviewed separately), a Thermal Green Super Roubaix made by MITI in Italy. In fact, the sweater itself is also handmade in Italy.

The material is made of recycled polyamide and ‘Eco-Smart’ elastane. It has a soft, smooth finish on the outside, with a brushed fleece Roubaix finish on the inside.

It’s not windproof as such, but I thought it was hot under conditions down to 5 ° C with only a lightweight baselayer underneath, which fits with Shutt VR’s claim of 2 ° C to 12 ° C, though I’m sure that I would be happy to go lower with a winter base below, even below freezing. However, I tend to run a little hot.

With that in mind, I found that Tourmalet’s breathability was very good. Even by pressing hard on the hills at the lower temperatures, it worked out well for me, and if it got a little overwhelmed as the temperature rose, I quickly got the zipper down a pressure and it quickly made me dry and comfortable.

The tour paint is designed to work when you are in the saddle, with long sleeves so as not to expose your wrists when they are stretched out on the caps or drops, aided by the elastic cuffs. The tail has a small drop to protect your loins, even if it is not as long as some, while the front bends slightly upwards, which prevents the sweater from gathering when you are in a crouched position.

Upstairs, I found the medium-high collar high enough to prevent the worst cold breeze from whipping in, and I like to include a zippered garage to avoid neck irritation.

On the back you will find three pockets laid out in the traditional way. They are spacious, easy to access and do not stick together due to the tightness of the material.

However, there is no zip pocket for valuables, which I think is pretty given these days, especially on a sweater that costs as much as this.

Dimensioning

In terms of size, Shutt VR stuff seems to be getting a little smaller than most. Normally I would click on medium when I buy for myself, which is what I have here. The cut and shape are great, but it’s a bit on the warm side. Looking at the size guide, my 38 inch chest places me right in the upper area of a large, while my 34 inch waist places me in 2XL territory. Definitely a try-before-you-buy item of clothing, or contact Shutt VR’s team for advice.

If I pay £ 120 for a sweater, I would expect top quality all the way through and that’s what you get. The tour paint is really well made and the fabric proves to be robust and reliable.

In addition to the fleet in test, the jersey also comes in black and orange.

Value

Competitively, there are definitely plenty out there. Iwein was hugely impressed with the Chair Goat Men’s Ragamuffin 20 Hurricane Everyday Long Sleeve Jersey, which in addition to having a name that just rolls off the tongue, also has impressive breathability along with wind and water resistance, at £ 125.

The Gores C5 Thermo Jersey impressed Jamie, and it sounds capable of the same temperature range as the Tourmalet. It will now set you back £ 119.99.

Conclusion

Shutt VR has created a very traditionally styled long-sleeved shirt, but with bang up to date materials; even better, they are recycled too. I would like a valuables pocket with a zipper, but that’s literally the only thing missing for me.

No valuables pocket.

How does the price compare to similar products on the market, including those recently tested on road.cc?

There is so much competition when it comes to long-sleeved jerseys, across a huge price range. The Gore mentioned in the review has the same price and offers similar performance as the Tourmalet, and the stolen goat is £ 5 more; When you think about the handmade character of Shutt VR and the high quality of finish, I really do not think it is overpriced.

The tour paint is finished to a very high standard and is a pleasure to have on the bike when the temperatures are heading into single digits. It lacks a valuables pocket, but other than that, it’s a really good sweater.
