Even with the many options for music streaming to choose from these days, Spotify is still the king of millions of users. While the app enjoys a long, successful run, it has not shone in every category. Real-time lyrics have been remarkably absent from Spotify’s features for some time now, like competing services like Apple Music and Amazon Music. Fortunately, that is changing now.

Spotify is finally rolling out its real-time lyrics feature to all users, both free and premium, today, Thursday, November 18th. However, it is possible that you saw the news, turned on your Spotify app and were greeted by a whole lot of nothing. If so, there are a few tricks you can try to make the feature appear faster.

How to get real-time lyrics on your Spotify account

First, make sure your Spotify app is fully updated. Although it is not clear if this feature is linked to the latest Spotify version, we have seen the feature appear after updating the app. So go to the device you normally use Spotify for and make sure you are running the latest possible software version.

Are you still not showing up? That’s what happened to me on my iPhone. Even after an update from the App Store, I did not see real-time texts. The next step, I would suggest, is to sign in to Spotify from a new device. This feature works on all mobile and desktop devices running Spotify, so try it on another phone, tablet or computer. For me, I only saw the feature when I downloaded and logged in to Spotify on my Pixel 4. When I went back to my iPhone, it also magically appeared there.

How to use Spotify’s lyrics in real time on mobile, desktop or TV

On mobile, this feature is easy to use. When you tap a song that has real-time lyrics, you will see a “Lyrics” window that looks out from the bottom of the screen. If you scroll down or tap this window, it expands to a larger text window that shows you a brief preview of the song Musixmatch-driven lyrics (current lyrics are highlighted in white). However, if you tap this window again, it will go full screen so you can scroll through all the lyrics.

On the desktop, the function is one little more hidden. When you select a song that has real-time lyrics, you will see a small microphone icon next to the queue icon. Click on the microphone and you will see a large text window appear. Unlike mobile, it seems like you can not see the entire lyrics of the song right away. Instead, you will only see the current lyrics plus the next two lines or so.

If you are using Spotify TV, you will find the text button in the upper right corner of the Now Playing view. In addition, we should soon see this feature on the way to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung, Roku, LG, Sky and Comcast, so wherever you listen to Spotify, you can follow the lyrics .
