Internet music retail giant Reverb has made its accounts for the end of the year, counting the equipment we have purchased, and has released its list of the 20 best-selling amplifiers in 2021.
It’s a list that has some familiar faces, some guitar amplifier classics that dominated last year’s list, but a micro amplifier with stacks of effects and digital amplifier modeling technology under the hood, in a compact form, fits in your pocket. That’s right, go down, Fender’s Mustang Micro – officially Reverb’s best-selling amplifier in 2021.
What does the triumph of Mustang Micro tell us about current trends in guitar playing? Well, from a POV on the supply side, it tells us that digital modeling technology is changing what is possible with the guitar amplifier.
Again, the Mustang Micro is pocket-sized, it has a dozen built-in effects and a dozen amplifier emulations – most notably. And yet, this is not just a generously specified practice solution, it can be used as an audio interface.
From the demand side, Reverb said that another year in which digital amplifiers dominated the list was another sign of the impact of the pandemic.
“Modeling was generally quite popular again this year, which can certainly be attributed to the pandemic, at least in part,” says Reverb. “The other reason they’re becoming quite popular is that they’re honestly getting a lot better. The qualities that have always made them appealing – smaller size, less weight and a host of amplifier options in one package – are still there, while the technology has been vastly improved. ”
In fact, it is said that the highest-achieving tube amplifier in 2021 was the Vox AC15C1, which came in eighth – although it should be noted that the tube-powered preamplifier hybrid designs of Orange Micro Dark and Micro Terror came in fourth and fifth respectfully, suggesting that that guitar players still value pipe technology somewhere in the design. With digital technology closer to mimicking the reaction of the vacuum tube amplifier, today’s guitarist now has the opportunity.
