Thor 4 can finally pay off Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Magic Belt Reference

Thor: Love and Thunder could finally pay for Spider-Man: Homecoming’s reference to Thor’s magic belt by letting him use it to fight Gorr.

Thor’s magic belt reference in Spider-Man: Homecoming can finally be paid out when the former Asgardian king returns Thor: Love and Thunder. The fourth solo film for Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder seems to be strongly associated with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy appear in a supportive capacity, however Thor: Love and Thunder also brings Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) back to make her the character Mighty Thor. Marvel Studios may then be able to pay off from several dropped story lines from the franchise’s past.

Marvel Studios also forgot to explain a Thor reference in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Phase 3 movie featured an underplot about Tony Stark moving out of the Avengers Tower and moving all their belongings to the upstate Avengers Compound. There is a scene where Happy Hogan reviews the inventory of what still needs to be moved and one of the mentioned topics is referred to as “Thor’s Magic Belt”. Although Happy did not know how to pronounce the name, fans quickly discovered that this was Spider-Man: Homecoming Easter eggs were a reference to Megingjörð. The powerful belt is part of Thor’s comic book history and even Norse mythology, but MCU has not mentioned it since.

Now that Thor: Love and Thunder is on the horizon, it could be the film that finally pays off the aforementioned magic belt reference. As long as Happy was able to transfer everything to the Avengers Compound, that means Megingjörð would have been in the base when Thor returned to Earth. He spent some time there after Avengers: Infinity War and when the team planned their Time Heist in Avengers: Endgame. Thor could easily have gotten the magic belt during this time, even if he did not use it to receive Thanos. Megingjörð could even have been moved to New Asgard without Thor really knowing.

The idea of Thor’s magic belt pops up in Thor: Love and Thunder would not just be a chance for Marvel to randomly pay for this Easter egg. There is an argument to be made that Megingjörð could be exactly what the God of Thunder needs Thor 4. It has been confirmed that he will fight Gorr the God Butcher in the film. Though he will do so with Stormbreaker in hand, the addition of the magic belt would help Thor far from defeating this new MCU villain. What makes Megingjörð so special is that it doubles Thor’s strength when he wears it. If he has to fight against someone who is known for killing gods, then having double his normal strength can help even the playing field.

If the MCU uses Thor’s magic belt Thor: Love and Thunder, it could help give the film even greater action sequences. Thor has previously been the focus of lots of memorable MCU fight scenes, especially in Thor: Ragnarok. Those moments were incredible with Thor’s standard power levels, then Thor: Love and Thunder can take things to the next level with the inclusion of his magic belt.
