The Aquarius Backpackers hostel in Byron Bay is locked after a new case

The hostel has been contacted for a comment.

The shutdown comes as thousands of teens prepare to arrive in Byron Bay and other North Coast holiday hotspots for annual school parties.

There were two new COVID-19 cases reported in the northern NSW local health district on Wednesday. One of the cases was a household contact in an existing case in Byron Bay’s local government area, while the other was recorded in Ballina and is under investigation.


The 276 new NSW COVID-19 cases on Thursday were slightly higher than the 248 registered on Wednesday.

The state’s double-dose vaccination rate for people aged 16 and older is now 92.1 percent, while 94.4 percent have received at least one dose.

In Byron Bay, where vaccination rates have lagged behind other parts of the state, 80 percent of people aged 16 and older are now fully vaccinated.
