Since China opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi 40 years ago, relations between China and the Emirates have seen significant development, marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This long-term cooperation reflects a shared vision and a strong will to strengthen ties in various fields to achieve their common interests.

Relationship history

Diplomatic relations between Abu Dhabi and Beijing began in 1984. In April 1985, China opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi, followed by the opening of its consulate in Dubai in November 1988. On the other hand, the UAE opened its embassy in Beijing in March. in 1987, and its consulate in Hong Kong in April 2000. Its consulate was in Shanghai in July 2009, and in Guangzhou in June 2016. Bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding between the two countries exceeded 148 agreements, reflecting the depth of the relationship and cooperation. .

Historical meetings

In recent years there have been historic meetings between the leaders of the two countries. In December 1989, the late Chinese President Yang Changkun visited the UAE and met with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In May 1990, Sheikh Zayed visited China, becoming the first head of a Gulf state to visit China. In July 2018, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the UAE and the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership was announced.

A quantum leap

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to China in July 2019 brought about a qualitative change in bilateral relations. In 2023, non-oil trade between the two countries reached $80.5 billion, up 4% from 2022. UAE investments in China between 2003 and 2023 were $11.9 billion, and Chinese investments in the UAE were $7.7 billion.

A promising partnership

The UAE-China partnership is promising and capable of further development. The joint economic, trade and technical committee between the two countries emphasized the importance of holding joint tourism exhibitions and events to enhance tourism cooperation. In 2023, more than one million Chinese tourists visited the UAE, and the number of flights between the two countries reached more than 210 per month.

Culture and education

The cultural sector has a significant role to play in increasing cooperation between the two countries. The Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Center for the Study of Arabic Language and Islamic Studies has contributed to the spread of Arabic culture in China since its establishment in 1990. In addition, cultural weeks, music festivals and book fairs have helped strengthen cultural relations. .

Educational initiatives

In 2019, it launched the “Teaching Chinese Language in 200 Schools” project in the Emirates, which has so far attracted more than 71,000 students in 171 schools, reflecting the two countries’ commitment to improving cultural and educational communication.
